My six-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter loves school. I was taken by surprise because, when they were young, her father and his sister hated school. But with my granddaughter, it’s different. On the days when I pick her up, and I walk into her room, I can see why: the atmosphere is one of respect and courtesy. She feels simultaneously safe and empowered.
She is happy about every subject, and is constantly amazing us with the new things she learns. What particularly warms our hearts is her command of Hebrew; our Israeli friends tell us that she has the accent of a native. And she sings songs and prayers flawlessly, even teaching them to her three-and-a-half-year-old sister. On display, is a strong and happy Jewish identity.
Our gratitude to Bill, Naomi’s Zayde, for sharing his observations about his granddaughter with us.
