About SJCS

Seattle Jewish Community School is a 90-student egalitarian TK-5th grade school where children – with the guidance of an innovative and dynamic teaching staff – are challenged and inspired as they embark upon lifelong journeys of learning and Jewish engagement. Our community-based approach promotes Jewish identity and practice, while remaining unaffiliated with a single Jewish movement. Fostering intellectual curiosity, creativity, respect for diverse points of view, and a values-driven Jewish literacy are core goals. SJCS begins its 19th year as new owners of an ideal North Seattle campus that offers a permanent foundation for continued growth and stability. Our elementary school program expands in 2009-10 to include an early childhood option with a transitional kindergarten. We continue curriculum development with the goal of accreditation from the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools. Our community includes a collaborative staff; an active, working Board of Trustees; and, a parent-body that expresses extraordinarily high levels of satisfaction. Ensconced in a campus that is quickly becoming a center for Jewish life and supported by parents, alumni, and individuals and institutions in the greater Jewish community, SJCS is poised for its next chapter of growth.

About the Head of School Opportunity
SJCS’ next Head of School – the third in our 19-year history – will have the leadership skills, experience, and creative vision to successfully chart and navigate a course of sustainable growth and stability. Supported by the assets of an inspired, collaborative staff; permanent campus; and a parent body that expresses extraordinarily high levels of satisfaction, the next Head will articulate and advance the mission of the school. S/he will balance consensus-building among all constituencies with a goal of increasing SJCS’ visibility and profile in the community of independent schools and in the greater Jewish community. S/he will demonstrate commitment to core values and possess a vision to interpret those values for continued relevance in a complex and rapidly changing world.

Interested candidates are invited to submit electronically a cover letter, resume, statement of educational philosophy and practice, and the names and contact information of three references to: headsearch@seattlejcs.org.

After carefully reviewing many applications and inquiries from around the US and aboard, the Head Search Committee has narrowed the field of candidates for the Head of School position to three finalists.  The finalists will visit the SJCS campus this month for final interviews.  The process will include a Community Q-n-A for each candidate.  Contact headsearch@seattlejcs.org for details about the Community Q-n-A.

December, 2009

After four months of reviewing applications, conducting interviews and meeting with candidates, the Head Search Committee is preparing for finalists' visits to our community in January.  Finalists will meet with all stakeholders, including faculty/staff, parents, Trustees, community leaders, and a Professional Advisory Group.  Chaired by Rabbi Rob Toren, Samis Foundation Grants Director, the group is comprised of prominent educators with both deep secular and Judaic backgrounds.  The group will meet with each candidate in January and provide an assessment of how the candidate’s pedagogical strengths match the needs of our school.  To read about who is on the Professional Advisory Group, please click here.

In May, 2009, the SJCS Board of Trustees announced that Head of School Debbie Butler opted not to renew her contract beyond June 30, 2010. Debbie's dedicated service to SJCS has included the roles of Founding Principal and Advisory Board member, in addition to her tenure as Head. Of the many milestones achieved under Debbie's leadership, none is more significant than the purchase of a permanent North Seattle campus in October, 2008.
The Board of Trustees announced its designated Head Search Committee (HSC) in June of 2009. The HSC begins work over the summer and will announce the Head opportunity in the fall when it officially begins a national search for SJCS' third Head of School. The HSC includes:
